Bam Bam Bigelow was quite the character. An extremely agile big man from New Jersey, it was always entertaining as a kid to watch him pull off cartwheels and execute a moonsault that was prettier than a lot of guys half his size. Plus he had a gruff voice and presence that would scare the crap out of most people. Bigelow was successful in the 80’s and early 90’s in the WWF and would move on to form one of the most badass groups in ECW with Chris Candido and my stepsister’s high school teacher Shane Douglas called the Triple Threat. It’s sad to say that Bigelow and Candido have both passed on.
On to the insanity. I guess for starters you would guess anyone who would save off the hair on their head and replace it with flame tattoos is a little bit kooky, but there’s much more to Bam Bam’s nuttiness than that…but in a good way. Bigelow quit the wrestling business quietly and moved to Florida without telling anyone. He was busted with pot and had a motorcycle accident and some minor traffic violations.
But the craziest thing he did was run into a burning building to save three kids, receiving terrible burns on almost half his body in the process. While racing through the building, he ran completely through a solid wall and landed in a huge ball of fire. He was quoted as saying, “It was the best move I ever made.” Batshit crazy and super heroic, wouldn’t you say? Sadly, Bam Bam gave no really crazy interviews and had no big on camera meltdown, but here’s this a match with Tazz that was on the very first ECW PPV at the CCBC Golden Dome a mile from my parent’s house. They actually fall through the ring during the match in what was surely one the craziest bumps ever.
