In his first professional start Dennis Dixon went 12 for 26, gaining 145 yards, with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He used his speed and picked up 27 yards and 1 TD on 3 carries. These numbers aren’t going to make him a top pick in your fantasy league’s draft next year but, there is a stat missing here that will keep him in the NFL next year as a 2nd string QB; 1 opportunity taken advantage of.
Steeler fans, ask yourself a question and be honest. Put aside the fact that Charlie Batch is from Steel Valley and a hometown hero. Is Charlie Batch still in the upper half of backup QB’s in the NFL? If you answered yes you lied to yourself. In his seven years on the Steelers he has only had to start 4 times. He has filled in admirably but he isn’t someone you want in control of your team if Ben misses an entire season. Many Steeler fans point out that he was a starter with the Lions before he came to us and he was, but he wasn’t a good one. The line on his most successful season (2000) was 221 for 412 with 2,489 yards. He threw 13 touchdowns but picked up 15 interceptions and had a passer rating of 67.3%.
Sunday’s performance by Dixon all but cemented that his role in the Steelers future is as their number 2 quarterback and that Charlie Batch’s is as the host of The Charlie Batch Show on PCNC. Dennis Dixon has the arm, speed, confidence, and charisma to lead the Steelers for an extended period of time if he is called upon.
